How We Design a Home Security System, Starting With What Keeps You Up at Night

It starts with a call or a form

Most projects start the same way. You call us, or you fill out the form on our website. I'll ask a few questions to get a feel for what you're looking for. It's just general knowledge at that point, because I'm coming out to your home either way, and that's where the real work starts.

The on-site talk

When I get there, we sit down and talk. Nobody calls about security because everything is fine. There's always something behind the call, so I want to know what it is. What's keeping you up at night? A door you don't trust, a side yard nobody can see, packages, a car in the driveway, a family member home alone. That answer drives everything else.

Designing around your concern

Once I know what's bothering you, we design the system around it. That can mean an Alarm.com security system with sensors on the doors and windows that matter, monitoring, and Lutron lighting control, with cameras added where they actually answer your concern. With Lutron, your blinds can open and close on a schedule so the house looks lived in, and one button can light the path through the house.

A motion sensor placed above a doorway covers the path an intruder would walk, and blends in with the trim.

Cameras: seen or not seen?

Then we talk about how you want the cameras to feel. Some people want cameras that are right in your face, so anyone walking up knows the house is covered. Others want things discreet and low key, more hidden, so the system does its job without changing the look of the home. Neither is wrong. It's about what fits you and the problem we're solving.

Night vision, and why color matters

Next we talk about nighttime, because there's a real difference in how cameras see at night.

Here's one most people never think about. Police will often use shoe color to help identify somebody. That's one of the often unrealized benefits of color cameras: they capture the color of the shoes, and that detail can help identify a bad guy.

Let's walk it together

If something about your security is keeping you up at night, we'll design around it.
