Security, Smart Homes and Theaters for Oak Brook, IL

Oak Brook is a young village, incorporated in 1958, and most of its homes went up in the 1970s and 1980s: large custom houses on big lots, many set back behind long drives, with newer estates and condo buildings mixed in. A lot of those homes still have the alarm that went in when they were built. We look at what you have, plan monitored security that fits the size of the property, and then add the Control4 and theater pieces you want, all from our office in Forest Park.

A local Forest Park team serving Chicagoland and the western suburbs since 2009. Real people answer the phone, and we plan every system with you in person.

Planning security for an Oak Brook home

Plenty of Oak Brook homes have an alarm on the wall that dates back decades, often wired, often still calling out over a phone line that the family no longer uses. Before we suggest anything new, we look at what is already there. Wired sensors in good shape can often stay, and the panel and communicator are what usually need to change. Moving monitoring to a cellular link through Alarm.com means a signal still goes out if the phone line or the internet is down.

Then we walk the property. On a large lot, the question is not only which doors and windows get sensors, it is how far the house sits from the street and what you want to know before someone reaches the door. Patio doors across the back, a walkout lower level, an attached garage with its own entry and rooms over the garage all go into the plan. Where a wall is all glass, glass-break detection often covers it better than a contact on every pane.

What we install in Oak Brook

  • Burglar alarms: Contacts on every exterior door and the openings that matter, plus glass-break and motion coverage sized to the house. We use 2GIG for clean wireless installs and DSC or Honeywell when the house is wired, and we can assess an existing panel before replacing anything. If you want cameras, we add them as part of the security system: a video doorbell and a view of the drive, with clips in the same app.
  • Monitored smoke and carbon monoxide: Smoke and heat detectors that report to a monitoring center, with carbon monoxide sensing near the furnace and the bedrooms. In a large house, a detector beeping on the far side of the building is easy to miss, and monitoring means someone gets called.
  • Alarm monitoring: Professional monitoring through Alarm.com over a cellular link, so a signal still goes out if the internet or the phone line drops.
  • Control4 smart home: Control4 runs the music, TVs, lighting and shades. Security stays on its own Alarm.com system beside it. The two are separate, and each has its own app.
  • Home theater: A dedicated theater or media room in the lower level, or a great room TV with the speakers in the ceiling and the equipment out of sight.
  • Pre-wire: For new homes and full remodels, we run wire for keypads, sensors, speakers, TVs and the network while the walls are open.

Local considerations in Oak Brook

Before it was a village, this was farmland along Salt Creek, settled in the 1830s and known at different times as Brush Hill and Fullersburg, names it shared with what is now Hinsdale. The Butler family bought land here starting in 1898, and over the following decades much of the area became small estates, polo fields and a golf course. The village incorporated in February 1958 with about a hundred residents. Oakbrook Center opened in 1962, luxury subdivisions followed through the 1960s and later, and the village became home to many corporate offices.

For our work, Oak Brook's housing means two things. First, a lot of houses here are at the age where the original alarm, wiring and electronics are due for a fresh look. Second, the houses are big, so keypad locations, how many detectors it takes and where the panel and equipment live all take real planning. In the condo buildings, we keep everything inside your unit and check the association rules before anything goes in a hallway.

For Oak Brook offices and shops

Oak Brook has a large office and retail base around Oakbrook Center and along the tollways. For an office or shop, we plan around how the space is used: an alarm the last person out can arm, monitored smoke detection, and a user code for each employee that can be shut off the day someone leaves. Questions from Oak Brook homeowners

Our alarm is older than our kids. Do we have to start over?

Not always. We check the panel, the wiring and the sensors first. Wired sensors in good condition can often stay, while the panel and the way it calls out are usually what need updating.

Our alarm still uses the phone line. Is that a problem?

It can be. If the line is cut or no longer in service, the alarm may not be able to reach anyone. We move monitoring to a cellular communicator through Alarm.com so that is not a weak spot.

Our house is set far back from the road. What makes sense outside?

A clear sign at the drive, good coverage on every door and, if you want them, cameras added to the security system so you can see the drive and the front door from your phone.

Can Control4 run our alarm too?

No. Control4 runs your music, TVs and lighting. Your security system works alongside it in its own app. They sit side by side, so a problem with one never takes down the other.

We live in a condo. Can we still have a monitored alarm?

Yes. A wireless alarm for the unit, a monitored smoke detector and a camera on your own door are common choices, and we follow the association's rules.

You are in Forest Park. Do you come out to Oak Brook?

Yes. We plan every system in person, so we come to the house, walk it with you and go over the plan before anything is installed.
